I am no longer teaching children. Please take a look at the blog as there may be something there that is helpful for you.
Does your child have some learning difficulties?
There may be a diagnosis such as Dyspraxia, Autism or some other label, but the label itself is not important. What is important is figuring out what the issues are and how your child learns. You may have noticed that your child finds it hard to learn some things. It may be that your child has trouble with using a pencil, scissors or ruler, or doing other fine motor tasks such as buttons. Puzzles may be difficult. Maybe it's literacy or maths that is an issue.
Or it may be that you just wish to ensure that your child is well prepared for school and the future by deciding to check things out and have some special tuition. |
I am experienced in teaching English as a second language. I work at a primary school teaching the international students there and am available for private teaching also.

How does your child learn?Does your child follow verbal instructions easily or do they need to be repeated a few times?
Is your child better at learning new tasks when the task is modeled in front of them? Do they learn from verbal explanation or visually by observing or by trying things out? Do they learn better in one-on-one situations? I will teach according to their learning style. How does your child apply his/her knowledge to the world? Is s/he able to reason, compare, remember and problem solve? Does s/he generalise knowledge to other settings and situations, or does it seem like a change means that the task is completely new. And how does your child cope with change? The parent is part of this teaching session.Be part of the session. Get to understand your child's learning better. Observe, discuss, question, listen. You are the most important person in your young child's life.
Work in partnership with me to understand what is going on for your child. I know you want your child's life to be the best it can be. Support him/her to reach their potential. Numeracy: If your child is experiencing some issues with maths, then I will clarify with you about where the difficulties show up. I will check out the early building blocks and teach in ways that are meaningful for you child. Reading: If your child is having some issues with learning to read, I will first check out some basic factors - visual discrimination, visual scanning, spatial perception, working memory, understanding of symbols, as well as factors such as ability to point one to one, and ability to use clues from pictures. Whole word recognition and knowledge of sounds of letters/words will be considered. |
Lets increase your child's motivation for learning.I will use your child's interests and strengths to design teaching tasks and use his/her interests to motivate him/her.
I will use specific praise - that is, positive comments about what s/he is doing. Even when not doing a task correctly there will be something to praise. We will use fun. The tasks will not be too challenging - small steps to learning and success all the way mean that a child's confidence will grow. The Workings of your Child's Brain. There are some brain functions which I will probably check out through specific activities and the setting up of particular situations. These include executive functioning. abstract thinking, processing time and social cognition (Theory of Mind). These make a difference to how your child functions in social situations and give understanding of where difficulties lie. Emotional Well-beingI can use some specific techniques to teach your child about emotions, how to deal with them and how to realise that s/he is a special person who has much to offer, so that they can live their life with confidence.
